Nepal Matching Gift Opportunity

Nepal is a country of great natural beauty, where life is hard for many. More than half of the nation’s 28 million people live in deep poverty. The poorest families are landless tribal people who come from the lower-castes, and often earn less than $1.25 a day. And the rural communities in which they live often do not provide opportunity for education. Six out of ten adult men are literate, and even fewer women are able to read or write.

Together with the Good Friends of Nepal (GFN), Partners International is working to address physical and spiritual needs in Nepal, where fewer than one half of one percent of the population are Christian.

“God has blessed and faithfully used each one of our field workers,” says GFN director, Bhim Lal. “People from the different tribes have come to know the Lord, baptisms of large and small groups could take place all year in various fields,” Bhim says, “and the numbers of churches are increasing.”

Good News for Nepal

GFN’s ministries have been very effective in helping to transform lives in rural Nepal. Last year, workers planted 55 new churches and fellowships, and the ministry operates two orphanages, a home for destitute widows and provides adult literacy classes for villagers. GFN also has a robust training program that prepares Christian leaders to effectively share the Good News in unreached villages.

At this stage of Good Friends of Nepal’s development, it is essential to equip the team with a vehicle to safely transport leaders and workers to the many remote locations of their ministry. Many more people could be reached if GFN had access with a safe and reliable four-wheel drive vehicle.

Your gift toward a new vehicle will be matched by a generous donor. Your gift doubles in impact!

Travel is hazardous on winding mountain roads

Bhim currently travels to the remote areas of ministry by motorcycle or public transportation. However, public buses are overcrowded, unreliable and very slow. And many of the most remote villages do not have bus service at all.

Motorcycle trips into mountainous regions can be faster but are very dangerous. Busy mountain roads are frequently lashed by wind and rain, making them muddy and very difficult to navigate on two wheels. And at high altitudes, it is often too cold and windy to ride a motorcycle.

In this demanding environment, a four-wheel drive vehicle is the safest way to travel. Access to reliable transportation will dramatically increase the amount of time that workers can spend with the people they serve.

Help provide a new 4x4 for ministry

GFN would like to purchase a Tata Sumo, which is a small utility vehicle produced in India. The Sumo seats eight and is a four-wheel drive vehicle capable of travelling across very rugged terrain. These vehicles are costly in Nepal, since the government imposes a 100% duty. While costly, GFN believes that a new vehicle will be more reliable and less expensive to maintain in the long run than a reconditioned one.

Please help us raise $20,000 toward the cost of this strategic ministry tool. The impact of your gift will be doubled, thanks to a matching gift from another generous donor. The combined gifts will provide the necessary funds to purchase the vehicle.

Thank you for considering a generous donation that will make it possible to take the Good News to the people of Nepal.
