“I never thought I would live to see this horror,” says Faduma Sakow Abdullahi.
In a desperate gamble to escape starvation in Somalia, Faduma walked 37 days with her five children to a refugee camp in Kenya. But the day before she arrived, two of her children died of hunger and exhaustion.
No mother should be forced to make this terrible choice.
The world’s worst humanitarian crisis in East Africa
But a widespread, devastating drought across East Africa has left millions of poor, rural families without food and water. After two consecutive years of little rainfall, crops have failed. Water sources have dried up. And farmers can only watch as their cattle die in their withered pastures.
The United Nations estimates that 9 million people are in urgent need of emergency food aid— incredibly that’s more than the combined populations of Vancouver, Calgary and the Greater Toronto Area. Without immediate assistance, many of these people will die of starvation.
I know your heart goes out to families caught in this terrible tragedy. We invite you to join a global effort to prevent the deaths of millions of children. Your gift will help local Christians respond to the physical and spiritual needs of people in great distress.
People are dying every day because they have no food
Partners International is working with our local partners in Kenya, to provide emergency food aid to 2,100 families in three counties including 2,000 children. Many of these families are displaced people from Somalia who have left everything for a chance to survive the famine.
The work will be done through a network of churches who are on the ground ministering to hurting families. These local Christians already know the people. And they know how to best help the families in greatest need—including those with vulnerable young children and those living with disabilities.
“Relief food is a necessary part of our mission work that is going on in this particular fields,” says Reverend Henry Okodi.* “It has become difficult to share the love of Christ with someone who has lost their livelihood and is facing starvation.”
Feed the hungry in the name of Jesus
You can help provide life-saving food for families caught in the grip of this terrible disaster. The emergency food aid you provide will be distributed in those communities where the government and other agencies have a limited presence.
Your gift of $40 today will prevent deaths from starvation by providing such life-saving relief as:
- A famine survival kit that provides a family with one month's supply of rice, lentils, sorghum and cooking oil,
- A package of medicines to rehabiliate 8 severely malnourished children under age 5, or
- A nutritious lunch for 7 children at an emergency school feeding program—likely the only meal they will eat that day.
Please send your gift today. The faster we can provide funds to our partners, the more lives we can save from starvation. Thank you for joining this vital effort to save lives with a gift given in the name of Jesus.
