The face of South America has been rapidly changing over the past two decades. Brazil is emerging as one of the major economic powers in the world economy and brutal drug wars in Colombia are beginning to subside. Brazil is considered to have an evangelical Christian population approaching 30 percent. So you may ask, “Is our contribution still needed?” The answer is an unequivocal “Yes!” As many western mission agencies withdraw their personnel, the need and the opportunity for locally-led contextual mission work has never been as great. In much of South America the divide between the rich and poor, the majority population and the oppressed minority remains. In the city of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, approximately 90 percent of the 3 million population lives below the poverty line. The great needs for the basics of human existence and dignity remain. Local mission agencies are well positioned to build on past efforts and help the Church move forward. Brent Mitchell |
