Santu Banerjee drives a rickshaw in Kolkata, India. After an entire day of peddling, Santu keeps just a small percentage of the fares he collects from riders. Everything else goes to pay rent to the rickshaw owner.
“Most of the time,” he says, “we as a family live on one meal a day.”
The family was trapped. No matter how hard Santu and his wife worked, they earned barely enough money to survive. Saving enough money to buy a rickshaw was impossible. And they could not afford to pay tuition for their son’s education. The offerings made to their family gods didn't seem to help. And they didn't know what else to do.
A world in need of hope
Santu is just one of the millions of people around the world who are stuck in a cycle of poverty that impacts every aspect of life. Where can the poor turn for help?
Partners International believes there is hope for Santu, and for all those living in poverty and darkness. That hope is Jesus, who offered everyone the promise of a new and abundant life. We are sharing that message through carefully selected local partners who are living out the Good News in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Good News for physical and spiritual needs
In Kolkata, our partner agency—Touch the Lives—reached out to Santu and his family. Through our child sponsorship program, Santu’s son was able to go to school and learn to read and write. He also studied the Bible, sang choruses and learned how to follow Jesus.
As the family’s situation became known, the ministry responded with more assistance. Using funds donated through the Harvest of Hope catalogue, Santu received a loan to buy his own rickshaw. Since then his income has increased and he can easily make regular payments on his loan.
“I am so happy,” says Santu about the gift, “which really helps me to survive and take care of my family better.”
The health of the family has been growing, and Santu and his wife have been praying with Christians at the church Touch the Lives has established in their neighbourhood.
Good News transforms communities
When the Good News is shared in both word and deed it changes lives, heals families and ultimately transforms entire communities. Partners International has partnerships with effective Christian agencies in 55 countries. These faithful servants are being used by God to bring light to many dark places. Here are just a few ways our partners are helping to transform their communities.
- Compassionate response: Working through our local partner in Peru—the Psalmistas—the entire community of Cayán now enjoys clean water, safe sanitation and a new level of health. Community leaders have asked our partners to start a regular Bible study.
- Education and children’s work: The brutal civil war in Sudan has destroyed homes, hospitals and schools. Partners International is working with the African Inland Church to provide two school buildings that will make it possible for 300 children to go back to school—and gain the skills they need to escape poverty.
- Evangelism and church planting: An ailing woman in Nepal went to her local witch doctor for relief. She wore the herbs he gave her and fervently worshipped the idols, but she grew gravely ill. A Christian worker with our partner, the Good Friends of Nepal, visited her and prayed for healing. And by God’s grace she is now well. Since then, 14 people in her village have been baptized, and many are still coming to Christ.
- Leadership Training: Through Joshua Vision, our partner in India, we provided an evangelist with theological and missiological training, as well as skills to help villagers start small livestock farms. Since then Angcha has established 20 fellowships of 355 new believers from five of the country’s least reached people groups.
Around the world, our local partners are living out the Good News in a way that makes a lasting difference. Take a few moments to explore our web site and learn more about where we work and what we do.
